React vs Next.js for Your Business Website: Which to Choose?

React or Next.js? A plain-English comparison for business owners covering SEO, speed, cost, hosting and when each choice makes sense for websites, web apps and SaaS products.

The short answer

If search traffic matters, such as a marketing site, marketplace or blog, Next.js is usually the better choice. If you are building a logged-in tool, such as a dashboard, CRM or internal system, React with a fast build tool such as Vite is often simpler and perfectly fine.

What React and Next.js actually are

React is a library for building user interfaces. On its own, a typical React app sends a mostly empty HTML page to the browser and then builds the page with JavaScript.

Next.js is a framework built on top of React. It adds routing and, most importantly, the ability to render pages on the server or at build time, so the browser, and Google, receive real HTML straight away.

SEO: the biggest difference

Google can render JavaScript, but rendering is slower and less predictable than reading HTML that is already there. Pages that ship complete HTML with titles, descriptions, headings and structured data in place are easier to crawl and index.

  • Next.js: server-side rendering and static generation give every page complete HTML. Ideal for product pages, listings, blogs and landing pages.
  • React only: fine for pages behind a login, where SEO does not apply. For public pages you would need a pre-rendering or server-rendering setup of your own.

On the Midland Commercials truck marketplace we built a React front end with server-rendered HTML for every vehicle listing, so each truck can appear in search on its own.

Speed and user experience

Both can be very fast. Next.js has the edge on first load because content arrives as HTML, which helps Core Web Vitals such as Largest Contentful Paint. Once loaded, both feel like smooth single-page apps.

When plain React is the better fit

  • Admin panels, dashboards and internal tools
  • SaaS products where nearly every screen is behind a login
  • Apps that share code with a React Native mobile app
  • Projects that need a simple static hosting setup

When Next.js is the better fit

  • Marketing websites and landing pages
  • E-commerce stores and marketplaces with many product pages
  • Content-heavy sites and blogs
  • Products that mix public SEO pages with a logged-in app
